Dr. Nykjaer is professor of Medical Biochemistry at Aarhus University, Denmark, and Core Group Leader at The Danish Research Institute of Translational Neuroscience (DANDRITE), Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. He is director of the Lundbeck Foundation Research Center MIND, and heading NeuroCampus Aarhus, a research cluster comprising >500 scientists, aimed at bringing together basic and clinical researchers. In 2014, he was appointed full Professor of Neuroscience at Mayo Clinic, Florida.

The theme of his research is molecular and functional aspects of Vps10p-domain receptors/sortilins in the healthy brain and in psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. He has provided fundamental contributions to the understanding of how receptor cross-talk by sortilins govern their multifunctionality, and how the proteins balances signaling by proneurotrophins and mature neurotrophins.

Dr. Nykjaer is a founder/co-founder of three biotech companies where he has served CEO and CSO. He has also experience as scientific advisor for the pharmaceutical industry.

From November 2017, he will be the director of the new Danish National Research Foundation Center of Excellence, PROMEMO, which will study the molecular mechanisms underlying long-term storage of emotionally charged memories.
