Professor Geoffrey A Donnan AO MBBS, MD, FRACP, FRCP (Edin), FAHMS

Professor Donnan is the Director of The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health in Melbourne, Australia.  He is Professor of Neurology at the University of Melbourne and Head of the Florey Department of Neuroscience and Mental Health, The University of Melbourne.

His research interest is clinical stroke management and the interface between the basic and clinical sciences.  He has increased our understanding of the duration and nature of viable ischaemic tissue (the ischaemic penumbra) after stroke onset.  Together with colleagues he promoted the idea that studies of clinical models of stroke require a similar rigorous approach to their conduct that of clinical trials.  He has driven or been involved in the management of a large number of clinical trials of acute stroke therapy and secondary stroke prevention.  He co-founded the Australian Stroke Trials Network (ASTN) as well as the broader neuroscience trials network, Neuroscience Trials Australia (NTA).  Professor Donnan currently co-leads trials designed to extend the time window for the most common therapeutic intervention for ischaemic stroke, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and trials of clot retrieval.

He has received a number of national and international awards including the World Stroke Organization’s leadership in stroke award, the Karolinska Institute’s award for stroke research and the Wepfer Award of the European Stroke Congress.  He is a founding Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
