Dr. Axelsen is chief consultant physician and since 2008 Ombudsman for Research Integrity at Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen. He graduated in 1969 and earned in 1976 his doctoral degree in medical science from University of Copenhagen. He has held leading positions at Statens Serum Institut, including being director 1985-88, and  has been active in many national and international scientific committees, and in planning/advisory committees, e.g. WHO’s Consultation on Immunological Research in Tuberculosis (1981); the Committee for the Medico-Biological Programme between The People’s Republic of China and Denmark (1985-95); The Danish Government’s Coordinating Committee for Biotechnological Research (1986-90); The Nordic Ministers’ Council’s Committee for Bioethics (1994-2001). Dr. Axelsen was in 1992 the co-founder of the Danish Committee on Scientific Dishonesty, and is member of the Danish Academy for the Natural Sciences and the Danish Academy for the Technical Sciences. He has served on a number of boards including The Lundbeck Foundation (1987-2011), vice-chairman since 2004; he is also chairman for various subcommittees for The Lundbeck Foundation‘s scientific prizes and research grants. He has edited handbooks on electroimmuno-precipitation techniques and has also published in the fields of immunochemistry, infection-immunology and clinical biochemistry. He has tutored many researchers for DMSc.-degrees, and given numerous lectures in many European countries and in USA. In 1966 he won University of Aarhus’ gold medal, and received Thorvald Madsen’s Prize in 1982.
